AUTISM (ASD) ASSESSMENT
ADULTS
WHAT IS AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized by challenges with social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors, with symptoms and severity varying widely among individuals.
Autistic adults may experience stress in social situations, finding it challenging to engage in social conversations, understand others' intentions, or interpret nonverbal cues. Due to social anxiety and stress in dealing with relationships, autistic adults may withdraw from workplace interactions, avoid attending social gatherings, or experience a significant energy drain form participating.
They may display a tendency to take things literally, struggle with the nuances of conversation, or find it hard to engage in small talk. This can lead to misunderstandings and miscommunications in both personal and professional settings. While they may excel in technical or factual discussions, they may find the subtleties of social communication challenging.
Many autistic adults experience heightened sensory sensitivities. They may be overly sensitive to lights, sounds, textures, or smells, which can make everyday environments overwhelming. This sensory overload can lead to anxiety and stress, making it difficult for them to focus or remain comfortable in certain settings. As a result, they may avoid crowded places, noisy environments, or certain types of clothing, which can limit their participation in various activities and social events.
Autistic adults may have a strong preference for predictability and find comfort in familiar patterns and schedules. Disruptions to their routine can cause significant distress and anxiety. The need for structure can be both a strength and a limitation; while it can lead to high levels of productivity and efficiency in certain tasks, it can also make adapting to change or unexpected situations challenging.
Autistic adults are at an increased risk for mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression. The constant effort to navigate a world that often feels overwhelming and confusing can take a toll on their mental well-being. Access to supportive mental health services and a strong support network can play a crucial role in helping them cope with stressors and maintain their well-being.
ASSESSMENT PROCESS
As a private clinic, we provide assessment for a fee. These services provided by our psychologists are based on an hourly rate. Fees for an assessment include direct and indirect services. Direct services are typically scheduled in-person and virtual appointments. Examples of indirect services include scoring tests, interpreting test results, and writing an assessment report. On occasion, an individual may require additional hours of testing. The time required for an ASD assessment is approximately 15 hours.
Estimated assessment hours needed for an adult:
-
Client Interview (2 hours)
-
Parent / Informant Interview (with the consent of the client, 1 to 2 hours)
-
Comprehensive assessment of cognitive and psychological functioning (6 hours)
-
File review, scoring, and preparation of assessment report (6 hours)
-
Feedback (0.5 to 1 hour)
ASSESSMENT OUTCOME

A feedback session and an assessment report will be provided at the end of the autism assessment. The client’s developmental history, areas of concern, test results, diagnosis (if any), and recommendations related to the given diagnosis are typically included in the report. If the individual does not meet diagnostic criteria for ASD, then the report will provide an explanation of why the individual does not meet criteria along with recommendations.
